Boat Life Activities

IGY Marina on the Savannah River offers a front-row seat to one of Georgia’s most iconic waterfront settings. Located directly across the river from historic downtown Savannah, this location blends classic Southern charm with vibrant riverfront energy. The Savannah River provides expansive cruising, scenic views of passing ships, and easy access to coastal waterways, making it a unique and exciting destination for boaters. With the skyline of downtown Savannah as your backdrop and the rich history of the river all around you, IGY Marina is the perfect place to experience boating at the heart of the Hostess City.

  • Recreational Boating & Cruising: Enjoy a scenic cruise along the river, especially between Savannah’s historic waterfront and the wildlife areas upriver.
  • Fishing: The Savannah River is great for freshwater and brackish-water fishing. Common catches: bass, catfish, striped bass, crappie, and redfish closer to the coast.
  • Wildlife Watching: The river and surrounding marshes are home to dolphins near the coast, as well as alligators, turtles, herons, eagles, and other wildlife upriver.
  • Sandbar or Shoreline Relaxation: Several sandbars and quiet shoreline spots, including Tybee Island, are good for anchoring, swimming, or picnicking.
FAQs

Where can I go with the boats?

Cruise the historic Savannah River with stunning views of downtown Savannah’s riverfront, historic architecture, and passing ocean-going ships. Head east toward the Intracoastal Waterway to explore winding tidal creeks, salt marshes, and barrier islands, or make a memorable trip to Daufuskie Island, known for its quiet beaches, rich history, and laid-back coastal charm.

What are the boating boundaries?

Boating boundaries extend along the Savannah River, through the Intracoastal Waterway, and into nearby coastal waters. With additional offshore training, members can venture beyond the river and ICW to explore nearshore Atlantic waters, barrier islands, and destinations such as Daufuskie Island.

Attractions & restaurants accessible by boat?

Enjoy convenient access to some of the area’s most popular waterfront destinations. Dock or tie up near River Street to explore Savannah’s shops, galleries, and dining along the historic waterfront. Cruise to Daufuskie Island for waterfront restaurants, local landmarks, and a relaxed island lunch. Additional stops along the Intracoastal Waterway and nearby marinas offer casual dock-and-dine options, live music, and scenic spots perfect for a mid-day break.

Where is the best place to fish?

The Savannah River and surrounding coastal waterways offer excellent fishing opportunities. Popular spots include river bends and docks along the Savannah River, tidal creeks off the Intracoastal Waterway, the waters surrounding Daufuskie Island, and nearshore coastal areas just outside the river mouth.

What kind of fish can I catch?

Drop a line and you may catch Redfish, Spotted Sea Trout, Flounder, Sheepshead, Black Drum, Tarpon (seasonal), Shark, Jack Crevalle, and other inshore and nearshore species common to Georgia and South Carolina coastal waters.

Animal life to see and where?

The Savannah River ecosystem is rich with wildlife. Watch for Bottlenose Dolphins riding the wake, Manatees during warmer months, and a wide variety of coastal birds including Pelicans, Egrets, Herons, Ospreys, and Bald Eagles. The marshes and waterways around Daufuskie Island and the ICW are especially active with wildlife.

Islands, sandbars, or preserves to see?

Favorite destinations include Hutchinson Island, Daufuskie Island, Little Tybee Island, Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge, Ossabaw Sound, and hidden sandbars along the Intracoastal Waterway—perfect for relaxing, exploring, or enjoying a day on the water.
