From Franchisee to CEO: Building the Premium Boating Country Club

How a Passion for Boating Turned Into the Most Successful Franchise Story in the System

In 2004, a passionate boater, Tom Gardiner, took a bet on a young brand called Nautical Boat Club®. What he saw then still defines us today: a premium boating country club with a better operational plan, better boats, and a better experience.

This is the story of how one of our first franchisees became our most successful operator — and eventually the owner of the entire system.

Back in 2004, Nautical Boat Club® was still in its infancy. But even then, one thing was clear:

  • The operational plan was heads and tails above competitors.
  • The brand positioned itself as a true Boating Country Club.
  • The focus was on employees and members — not just transactions.

That early franchisee opened his first location in Austin. Over the next 10 years, he scaled to five locations — becoming the most successful franchisee in the network.

Then something even bigger happened.

He sold his clubs to two team members who had started with him in 2004 — both of whom are now among the largest owners in the system. Shortly after, he was given the opportunity to purchase the franchise from the founder — his mentor.

That’s long-term value creation. Not just for members. For owners.

Why the Model Wins

Nautical Boat Club was built to be premium. That decision drives everything:

  • Best locations
  • Best boats
  • Best employees
  • Best members

Premium positioning leads to:

  • Higher margins
  • Higher revenues
  • Better clientele
  • Stronger retention

This isn’t about being the biggest at any cost. It’s about being the best — and building a business that reflects that.

The Franchise Advantage

Starting a business from scratch is risky. A franchise dramatically increases your odds of success because:

  1. You’re buying into a proven concept.
  2. You’re backed by operational systems refined over decades.
  3. You join a powerful network of owners.

Today, our average franchisee owns three locations.

And the support network is real.

Need marketing guidance? Call an owner who specializes in it.
Need help with social media? Another owner has mastered it.
Need operational insight? There are hundreds of years of combined experience across the system.

You are not alone.

A Clear Growth Runway

We estimate:

  • 50 clubs in 5 years
  • 100 clubs in 10 years

That means 50–75 prime territories still available.

For entrepreneurs who want to get in on the front end of national expansion — this is the window.

Every time our leadership walks into a club, they see:

  • Members smiling
  • Beautiful boats lined up
  • Families making memories
  • Staff building careers

We’ve built a career path where team members can grow from dock staff to manager, to area manager — and even to ownership.

That’s rare.

This isn’t just a franchise opportunity.
It’s a premium lifestyle business.
For people who love boats, water, and building something meaningful.

Is It a Fit?

If you’ve ever thought about:

  • Running your own business
  • Investing in yourself
  • Turning your passion for boating into ownership

The next step is simple: start the conversation.

We’ll determine together if it’s a fit.

Because when it works, it’s not just profitable.

It’s a dream job.
